Brno, Saturday October 15th: N3krozoft Ltd representative M. Schmalstieg has been directing a collaborative reading workshop, “Listening to data”, in the frame of the 3rd Czech-German symposium Media Performance 3.

N3krozoft Ltd representative M. Schmalstieg gave the audience a glance on the ongoing Kontinuum N+N net.art memory project. The talk was followed by an impromptu reading session, where participants joined their voices in an attempt at decyphering some of the mailing-list fragments and hypertext manifestos that where disseminated during the years 1995-2003 across the infosphere by the antiorp / integer / =cw4t7abs entity.

Kontinuum N+N is an ongoing research and documentation around a distributed personality that haunted the global electronic networks during the years 1999 to 2003, polarizing the online community with her radical software experiments before escaping into digital oblivion.

It lived 10 years of rustic travelling and jolly processing. It is now peacefully resting, forever empty of all data.

Boris Kish: Even if if technically LOL is a post-kinematic film – a lettristic film, insofar as one is confronted, during 80 minutes, with text hovering over a screen; and a purely digital film, without any solid carrier, since the image – duplicated as in Warhol’s “Lupe” – is projected in real time (from the webcam) and is nothing but forwarded through the video buffer of the computer… – still, in spite of this very abstract process, we experience each projection of LOL as a very direct, visceral event. The presence of the performer, personifying Ripper during his last trip, is obviously of primary importance. We try to create a situation of confrontation, of emotional intensity, which brings us back to the first hours of the cinema. Also for this reason a musician accompanies the projection with live electronics, in analogy with the piano players in the times of silent film.

Manuel Schmalstieg: In the case of this chat protocol it is striking that the trace of the event totally describes the event. And this trace, the text, would not exist without the technical framework through which we communicate. It testifies the death of a young man, but at the same time it is a statement about that framework. For me this text represents telecommunication in it’s purest form. The idea of telecommunication is connected with death since its inception – already Edisons phonograph was created to record people’s voices, so that they could still be heard after their death. Thus the telecommunication media, into which we invest so much time and energy, reveal their full meanig.

Low-Rez Stories/Solaris (1972-2010)

Low-Rez Stories/Solaris (1972-2010) is a video installation that confronts a scene from Andrei Tarkovski’s 1972 Science-Fiction film Solaris (a long non-narrative sequence filmed on the urban highways of Tokyo) with a “remake” of the same highway track within Google Streetview.

Between 2008-2009, a vehicle manned by the staff of the Californian multinational has recorded the same highway tracks with automated panoramic cameras. The Google Streetview service, that has raised controversy and has been banned in several European countries, makes this imagery accessible through the GoogleMaps and GoogleEarth services.

By this juxtaposition, the project aims to reflect on the powerful representations of “the future” that have been generated, both by a visionary film maker and by a global corporation with undisclosed motivations, based on a simple naturalistic recording of Japan’s post-war urban architecture. The project intends to work on several levels, stimulating an analytical gaze and involving the viewer’s emotional time/space coordinates.

A layer of “subtitles” is complementing the images, mixing fragmentary micro-narratives and elements of critical discourse. Those subtitles are a one-to-one transcription of the text comments that Internet users have posted on the Youtube platform, where the original Solaris sequence has been uploaded by a user in 2007. The tone of the comments balances between factual, humoristic, emotional, and even poetic notes.

Game Over: Pacman Reloaded

On August 28, N3krozoft agent Manuel Schmalstieg participates in the re-enactment of the 1980 computer game classic Pacman, playing one of 111 human pixels. This perfomance marks the fifth episode of the Game Over project by swiss artist Guillaume Reymond. The stop-motion video was shot over the duration of four hours at the Trafo cinema (Baden, Switzerland), for the new ProHelvetia programme GameCulture.

The two-channel video installation Low-Rez Stories/Solaris is exhibited in the frame of Actual Fears, a video art programme curated by CAN (Centre d’art de Neuchâtel).

The piece is based on the juxtaposition of the famous urban highway sequence from Andrei Tarkovski’s 1972 movie Solaris, filmed in Tokyo, and a rendering of the same highway track shot in Google Streetview.
